Community Conversations: Hiring, Training, and Retaining Rising Stylists | Diana Varvaro | School Director | Paul Mitchell The School, NYC

On November 27th, we were joined on Instagram Live by Diana Varvaro, School Director of Paul Mitchell The School NYC, to discuss hiring, training, and retaining Rising Stylists.

Community Conversations are an opportunity for audience members to jump into conversations in real-time to create a dialogue instead of a static recording to listen to later.

We asked if you had any questions for the students of Paul Mitchell The School NYC so here are just some of YOUR questions we covered:

  • What struggles do students have with salon owners?
  • What’s your biggest motivator? Is it money, satisfaction, helping people, etc.?
  • What makes an ideal boss?
  • What determines whether you stay at your ideal salon home for the long term?
  • What’s the 1 thing you’re looking for in a salon?
  • Besides technique & education, what’s the 1 thing you want to learn at your new salon?
  • Are you willing to train for 6-12 months? This is not a mandatory time sentence, but 90% of our apprentices need, at least, 6 months, but the majority need 12 months of training.

This is a list of questions the students say they have for Salon Owners (prepare these answers in advance for all your upcoming interview!)

1.) How many days/hours are you going to give me as a schedule?

2.) Are you flexible if we need time off or vacations, holidays or emergencies

3.) What kind of benefits or incentives do you offer? And when will we get paid?

4.) What does your training program look like?

5.) Is your salon busy?

6.) How can I grow and advance here?

7.) What is your dress code policy?

8.) What does your walk-in system look like, and how would I be able to build a clientele?

We will also be checking in with YOU to see if you used any of this information shared today to update your interviewing and other processes next month…

So, mark your calendars for Jan 8th at 7:30 PM ET, when we will be discussing strategies and other things you can do to attract Gen-Z and other Rising Stylists…or just get them through your door to interview!

“I THINK HAIRSTYLISTS ARE THE COOLEST, NICEST, AND MOST FUN GROUP OF PEOPLE ON THE PLANET! I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT USHERING IN AN EMPOWERED-STYLIST FUTURE, AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE GETTING STYLISTS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE TOGETHER IN A NON-COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT WHERE WE CAN LEARN, LAUGH, AND GROW TOGETHER.”
-Said by ME!
Robert started his hair journey as a kid in rural America offering haircuts on the street to kids in the neighborhood, not realizing, one day, he would find himself working the front desk at a hair salon while in high school. From there, his experience from salon-to-salon has included the front of the house, back of the house, stylist, educator, and consultant. It was during this movement through various salons he developed a passion to empower stylists and educate owners on how to raise the industry standard of excellence, mutual respect, and professionalism amongst stylists, managers, owners, and clients. Robert currently is the General Manager and a Master Stylist at Violet Salon in Georgetown, DC.
