KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Starting as a student, Amanda waited to finish school and trained at Sasoons, but before finishing training, Amanda decided that was not the place for her. She went to a salon to do color, teach, & then went out on her own with some colleagues to open a suite!
  • Going out on her own was prompted by reaching the top of her position with her company. She was a national educator, and at the top of the commission scale she could reach there, so the next step was going out on her own.
  • Amanda leveraged her clientele, which included a development company that helped her current commercial space. They helped with architects, interior designers, etc.
  • Salon de Muse was designed to create a space where budding hairpreneurs can build their business outside of suite ownership. She wants to give guidance and other assistance to hairdresser entrepreneurs (hairpreneurs).
  • Relationships with customers not only pay Amanda for her services, but they also helped her open her salon! Relationships are so important!
  • Being perfect at your craft is a nice goal, but is not achievable. The relationship with your client will get them coming back year in and year out WAY MORE than your skill set.
  • Learn from your fellow hairdressers, do apprenticeships, take classes, and always remember there is something you can learn from everybody!

“I THINK HAIRSTYLISTS ARE THE COOLEST, NICEST, AND MOST FUN GROUP OF PEOPLE ON THE PLANET! I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT USHERING IN AN EMPOWERED-STYLIST FUTURE, AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE GETTING STYLISTS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE TOGETHER IN A NON-COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT WHERE WE CAN LEARN, LAUGH, AND GROW TOGETHER.”
-Said by ME!
Robert started his hair journey as a kid in rural America offering haircuts on the street to kids in the neighborhood, not realizing, one day, he would find himself working the front desk at a hair salon while in high school. From there, his experience from salon-to-salon has included the front of the house, back of the house, stylist, educator, and consultant. It was during this movement through various salons he developed a passion to empower stylists and educate owners on how to raise the industry standard of excellence, mutual respect, and professionalism amongst stylists, managers, owners, and clients. Robert currently is the General Manager and a Master Stylist at Violet Salon in Georgetown, DC.
