KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • The key to growth in this industry is education!
  • Sam Villa was inspired to get into hair because his dad was in the industry.Going to shows with his dad while he was coming up as a stylist, Sam wanted to be on stage with the other platform artists.
  • If you want to be on stage, know that there may not be as much money in it as you might think. Focus on your why or your purpose. If this is your goal, pursue it; just know all the information.
  • Mentorship and Apprenticeship is an incredible way to upgrade what you learned at school. Find a salon that fits your needs and has a robust and comprehensive apprenticeship program.
  • Your ability to communicate will help you build wealth.
  • Relationships with colleagues, family, and clients will provide the support, confidence, and income you need to achieve your goals.
  • How you make a person feel (their experience) is more important than the hair.
  • Focus on your purpose, and the money will follow.
  • Create an experience for people where they want to come back. Do they want to laugh, chat, chill, or do something else? Get to know your clients and make it about them, not just your work.
  • Go above and beyond to make your client happy and ensure they are able to style their own hair with a customized video for them that you record while they are in your chair.

β€œI THINK HAIRSTYLISTS ARE THE COOLEST, NICEST, AND MOST FUN GROUP OF PEOPLE ON THE PLANET! I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT USHERING IN AN EMPOWERED-STYLIST FUTURE, AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE GETTING STYLISTS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE TOGETHER IN A NON-COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT WHERE WE CAN LEARN, LAUGH, AND GROW TOGETHER.”
-Said by ME!
Robert started his hair journey as a kid in rural America offering haircuts on the street to kids in the neighborhood, not realizing, one day, he would find himself working the front desk at a hair salon while in high school. From there, his experience from salon-to-salon has included the front of the house, back of the house, stylist, educator, and consultant. It was during this movement through various salons he developed a passion to empower stylists and educate owners on how to raise the industry standard of excellence, mutual respect, and professionalism amongst stylists, managers, owners, and clients. Robert currently is the General Manager and a Master Stylist at Violet Salon in Georgetown, DC.
